Aerial Ladder Safety Warning
NIOSH is investingating a Line-Of-Duty Death involving the catastrophic failure of an aerial waterway during an industrial fire in Pennsylvania. A Deputy Fire Chief was struck in the head by the monitor and 30 feet of waterway on April 8, 2008. He died instantly. Althought the investigation is not completed, NIOSH wants to advise all fire departments of the importance of properly securing their aerial waterway devices. Preliminary findings are showing that many aerials do not have a secondary stop for the waterway, therefore if the pin is not correctly seated, the potential for failure exists. Please check the link for more information and pass it on, for Safety's sake! http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/fire/SafetyAdvisory05052008.html

New Presumptive Law
Posted
On: Oct 03, 2008 (17:33:02)
On September 30th something amazing happened. The Workers Comp Advisory Council with the support of many observers, unanimously voted to support the Firefighters Presumptive Causation Bill. Now this important legislative proposal will go before the legislature during the next session which begins in January 2009. Those who were there saw a democratic process actually work for all the people involved. Those involved are firefighters covered by Workers Comp, municipalities and counties that employ firefighters, and the community members who need and support them. In April a task force was appointed to work on the idea of giving firefighters a presumption for certain cancers and infectious diseases found to be directly connected to employment, but difficult to link to a single exposure. Many hours were spent investigating the current medical data, the laws of other states and the claims history of the other states with Workers Comp presumptions in place to determine how New Mexico could adopt a similar protection. Finally a bill has been proposed, and the language is a perfect balance of protection for the firefighter, protection for the employer and a shared responsibility to keep our firefighters healthier overall. Please look for it at the New Mexico State Legislature’s 49th Regular Session. It will be called the Fire Fighters Presumptive Causation Act.
